How to measure and photograph your garden
With my Remote service you capture the site and I design from it. It’s straightforward — here’s exactly what I need. If anything’s unclear or missing, I’ll ask.
What you’ll need
- A long tape measure (and a helper if you can)
- A spirit level
- Paper and pencil for a quick sketch
- Your phone camera
1 · Sketch
Draw the plot and mark north
A rough bird’s-eye sketch is fine. Mark the house, doors, windows, paths, trees and anything you want to keep, and add an arrow for north.
2 · Boundaries
Measure boundaries and house walls
- Each boundary, fence and wall length
- The house wall facing the garden, with door and window positions
- Write each measurement on your sketch
3 · Levels & falls
Check how the ground slopes
Use a spirit level to note where the ground rises or falls, and roughly by how much. Mark steps, slopes and any wet spots on your sketch.
4 · Sun & shade
Note the light
Check where the sun and shade fall at 9am, 12pm and 5pm.
5 · Soil
A note on soil and drainage
Is it heavy clay, sandy, or does water sit after rain? A line or two is plenty.
Photo checklist
- Photos from every corner of the garden
- Tape measure in shot where you can
- Each boundary, the house wall and any level changes
- Anything you want to keep, and any problem areas
Then upload everything using the link I send you. No need for perfect photos.
